Katy Perry Concert
The anticipated Katy Perry concert was a success.
Over 2,000 students filled the Lakewood High School gym to full capacity on Friday, October 25, 2013. The marching band created a drum line and the cheerleaders yelled, “Lakewood loves Katy Perry. Come on Tigers, let’s roar!” while GMA aired preview segments. Companies like Jimmy Johns, Einstein Bagels, and LaMar’s Doughnuts donated breakfast for students. The sea of students wearing the “One World, One Roar” t-shrits was consistently cheering and chanting “Katy! Perry!”
The students were excited and had been at the school for three hours by the time Katy Perry began the concert at 6:30. When Katy Perry walked into the gym, escorted by the LHS football team, the crowd went crazy. She began the concert with “Roar”, then sang “Walking on Air”, a new song from her new album Prism. “California Gurls/Teenage Dream” followed suit and she finished the concert with “Firework” where the Lakewood High School seniors reminisced over the first LipDub in 2011.
Katy met the video creators, Gavin Rudy and Courtney Coddington, and they were interviewed live. She was presented a cake and given a Lakewood letterman’s jacket as a birthday present. Also, she wished all of the Lakewood sports teams good luck and she repeatedly said, “Stay in school!”
The concert put Lakewood High School into a frantic frenzy. The gym was closed (for the stage set-up), t-shirts were distributed, donations given, interviews were held, and GMA was a constant presence at LHS these past three weeks. After all of the hard work, the concert was a successful, culminating event. “It all just worked out!” LHS senior and LipDub producer, Courtney Coddington exclaimed.
The concert will be in the Lakewood High School memory books for decades and hopefully the “One World, One Roar” will live on and impact many people.
